The notorious Al Capone’s Mansion is back on sale for $8.5 million in Miami. The massive 10,000 square-foot waterfront mansion where Capone lived and died sits on the exclusive Palm Island, near Biscayne Bay, Miami’s skyscrapers, and South Beach’s hotel district.

The current owner of Capone’s mansion purchased the home about six months ago for a mere $7.4 million, according to Miami-Dade property records.

The notorious Capone Mansion was built in 1922 by Clarence Busch, of the Anheuser-Busch brewing family. Capone made his fortunes by importing and selling liquor during prohibition. Capone purchased his mansion in 1928 for $40,000, after reportedly being chased out of Chicago and Los Angeles.

This notorious mansion was believed to be the place where Capone plotted the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in 1929.

When Capone arrived in Florida, the city trembled, newspapers followed him everywhere, and the Governor, Doyle Carlton, ordered sheriffs to arrest him on sight. Still, Capone attempted to win the locals’ affection by promising not to break laws, and also giving generous donations to legislators.

The mansion itself became a fortress, with heavy wooden doors, concrete walls and a gatehouse to keep the people inside, in, and the people outside, out. In addition to the property itself, bodyguards were present at all time, both in the mansion, and following Capone as an entourage.

Capone was known for spending $1,000 at a time, just on clothing in the newly expanding downtown Miami, or possibly gambling at the casinos in Miami Beach, or other games he enjoyed.
